A wide variety of NoctiLumina® pigments are available, including several that are readable for up to 36 hours in the dark (tested with a 2 mm diameter by 0.5 mm dot after exposure to sunlight for 15 minutes). The pigments are nontoxic, non-radioactive, and non-acidic. All can be applied by hand or silkscreened with mesh sizes selected based on particle sizes. The pigments are very stable, with lifetimes conservatively expected to be in excess of 20 years.
In general, the pigments with larger particle sizes glow the longest and brightest. However, the new G8UF has surprising performance and is highly recommended both for its ease of application (it applies much like a paint) and for its all-night-long glow time. It also has an improved capability to charge in indoor fluorescent lighting environments.
NoctiLumina® G8UF and B8UF pigments have a unique chemistry that makes them completely immune to degradation by water or humidity. While B5E does not have a water immune chemistry, its encapsulation makes it suitable for immersion applications. These pigments are perfect for use on diver bezels or other external surfaces. See application note
When picking two standard pigments for a kit, we usually recommend having one be a finer grain and one a coarser grain, since a mixture of the two provides significant advantages. The ultra-fine pigments give the mixture a more paint-like texture, while the coarser grains provide enhanced glow. For example G8UF mixed with G7, or B8UF mixed with B5, provide an easy-to-apply product with great glow time. Mixing pigments with different glow colors may also be useful. B5E mixed with G8UF is a personal favorite.
The new NoctiStarTM pigments have a much whiter body color than any previous NoctiLumina® pigments. They have an engineered grain distribution providing an ideal mix of particle sizes to create a smooth application with great brightness and a long glow time.
